Food prices in the world in the next 15 years will grow

Food prices in the world in the next 15 years will grow by 15-20% a year, said executive director of the Association of the UK crop protection Dominic Dyer of the conference “Agribusiness and Food Industry of Russia”, organized by the Adam Smith Institute in Moscow on Tuesday.

Such a forecast he made on the basis of estimates of foreign experts.

According to him, the reason for the increased cost of food is to increase the population, increase in energy prices, diversion of agricultural raw materials for production of biofuels.

“It must be remembered that by 2050 the world population will increase to 8,5-9 billion people, so that in the next 50 years we will have to feed more people than in the previous millennium,” – said D. Dyer.

Agricultural production must increase by 2-3 times, he said, but doing so would have the expense of intensive technologies, as well as the area of agricultural lands per capita are declining. “By 2020, when the population on Earth will increase to 7.5 billion people, per capita will account for only 0.2 hectares of agricultural lands” – he said.
